What is different about Tahoka

Lynn County is one of the three counties — with Lubbock and Crosby — that make up the Lubbock MSA, so Tahoka is formally part of the metro even though it reads as a separate agricultural town.

The country south of Lubbock is classic South Plains: cotton on a section-line grid, scattered playa basins, and very little relief. Tahoka Lake, north of town, is one of the larger saline lake features in the area and a reminder that closed basins define drainage across this whole landscape.

The town takes its name from Tahoka Lake, a natural spring-fed lake about five miles northeast, whose Indigenous name is generally translated as clear or fresh water. Tahoka was established in 1903 as the seat of the newly organized Lynn County, and the Tahoka Townsite Company was formed that same year specifically to create the first town on the lower South Plains south of Lubbock. It incorporated on October 1, 1915, grew to 786 people by 1920 and 1,620 by 1930, and peaked around 3,262 in 1980. The 2020 census counted 2,375, at an elevation of 3,081 feet.

Lynn County's water features make it a slightly different place from Lubbock County, and in a way that matters. The county covers 915 square miles of nearly level terrain broken by the occasional draw or playa, with elevations running from roughly 2,881 to 3,274 feet — the county sits just west of the Caprock and a small portion of it is below the escarpment. Two lakes here hold water year-round: Double Lakes, seven miles northwest of town, and Tahoka Lake to the northeast. Mound Lake, on the Lynn-Terry county line, is a large permanent playa. A basin that holds water all year maintains a very different moisture regime in the surrounding soil than one that fills after a storm and dries out by August, so if your property sits near a permanent basin, that is worth raising with whoever inspects it.

The county also runs slightly drier than Lubbock — annual precipitation here averages about 17.88 inches against Lubbock's roughly 18.6. That is not a large difference on paper, but on ground where the whole mechanism is soil drying out and shrinking away from a foundation, a marginally drier baseline means the drought side of the cycle bites a little harder. Foundation watering during extended dry stretches is worth taking seriously here, done the same careful way it should be done anywhere on the South Plains: light, consistent, and set back from the slab rather than against it.
