The modern town is much newer: it was developed out of 576 acres, the last remnant of the Johnston Ranch, which at its height controlled around 165 sections. It began in June 1964 as a water control and improvement district, incorporated in December 1977 as the Village of Lake Ransom Canyon, and shortened its name to Ransom Canyon in 1984.

The geology is worth stating in numbers, because it is what separates this town from every flat one on the list. Yellow House Canyon runs roughly twenty miles and is one of three major canyons cutting the eastern side of the Llano Estacado, carved by the North Fork Double Mountain Fork Brazos River. Further downstream, where Farm to Market Road 400 crosses it, the canyon is nearly two miles wide and around two hundred feet deep. Central Lubbock sits at 3,202 feet; the top of the Buffalo Springs dam immediately upstream of Ransom Canyon is at 3,029 feet. That is real relief in a county whose defining feature is the absence of it.

When you are choosing who to have out, the question worth asking is whether they routinely work sloped sites. A great deal of Lubbock foundation experience is experience with flat lots, uniform upland soil and ponding — a genuinely different problem set from cut-and-fill pads, creep and concentrated runoff.
