Two more things worth knowing. Abernathy sits at 3,360 feet, roughly 160 feet above Lubbock, which is a reminder that the Llano Estacado rises steadily toward the north even though it reads as perfectly level from a car. And the discovery of oil nearby in 1946 and 1947 produced a boom that took the town from around 850 people to nearly 2,000 by the early 1950s. That burst put up a distinct cohort of postwar housing, built to the slab and site-preparation standards of that decade, which is now seventy-odd years into its service life.
