What is different about Plainview

As a regional center of roughly twenty thousand people with a long agricultural and food-processing history, Plainview has a deeper and older housing stock than the small towns between it and Lubbock — meaningful numbers of homes from the 1920s through the 1950s alongside later development.

Maxwell and Edwin Lowden Lowe secured a post office on March 18, 1887; the candidate names Runningwater and Hackberry Grove were both rejected in favor of Plainview because a vast treeless plain surrounded the place. The town was chartered on July 3, 1888, and became the Hale County seat that August. The railroad arrived at the end of 1906, the city incorporated in 1907, and by 1910 there were nearly 3,000 people here — at a point when Lubbock still had fewer than 2,000. A local editor of the period called it the Athens of West Texas. Wayland Baptist College, now Wayland Baptist University, was founded in 1909.

The most important local difference from Lubbock is that Plainview sits on Runningwater Draw. Draws on the Llano Estacado are broad, shallow features that carry water only intermittently, but they do collect and move it, which is more than can be said for the closed playa basins that define drainage around Lubbock. That means property here has an actual relationship to a drainage course, and where your lot sits relative to the draw genuinely matters. Establish that early. A house on the flat interfluve and a house on the margin of the draw have different water stories even if they are a mile apart.

Plainview is at 3,366 feet, about 160 feet above Lubbock, at the intersection of Interstate 27, US Highways 87 and 70, and State Highway 194. One piece of local trivia that is genuinely relevant to how old this landscape's story is: within the city limits is the site of a bison kill dated by archaeologists to between 7,000 and 9,000 years ago, significant enough that a whole class of projectile point is named for the town.
