Foundation Repair in Levelland, TX

Levelland is the Hockley County seat, roughly half an hour west of Lubbock on Highway 114, and a regional center in its own right for agriculture and energy.

What is different about Levelland

Home to South Plains College, Levelland has a housing stock reflecting its history as an oil and farming town — mid-century construction near the center, newer development on the margins, and a steady base of homeowners rather than a transient population.

The soils west of Lubbock trend sandier than those to the north and east. Sandy loams of the Amarillo type drain more readily and swell less than clay-heavy ground, which reduces one category of foundation risk. It introduces another: sandier material is more prone to being moved by water. Where a leaking line or concentrated runoff gets under a slab or under flatwork, sandy soil erodes and washes out, and the concrete above loses its bearing.

That makes sunken driveways, approaches and patios a common complaint here, and it makes finding the water source the first step rather than an afterthought. Lifting flatwork over a void that is still being fed just buys time.

Levelland is a comfortable drive for Lubbock-based crews, and most contractors covering the metro will take work in Hockley County. Scheduling is usually a day or two behind in-town work rather than a different service tier.

Local notes for Levelland homeowners

The town is named after how flat it is, which tells you most of what you need to know about its drainage. The site was originally surveyed in 1912 by C. W. Post under the name Hockley City, and the Littlefield Lands Company sold 464 farm tracts here between 1912 and 1920. Real development waited until Hockley County organized in 1921, at which point the place became the county seat, and in 1922 it was renamed Levelland for the local topography. On ground that flat there is no natural fall to carry water anywhere, so every bit of drainage around a Levelland house is drainage somebody built on purpose — or did not.

The single most useful fact for foundation work here is the age profile of the housing. The Hockley County oil boom of the 1950s took Levelland from 8,265 residents in 1950 to 13,809 by 1980, and South Plains College opened in 1958 on top of that. The 2020 census counted 12,652. What that curve means is that an enormous share of the town's homes went up inside a thirty-year window between roughly 1950 and 1980, built to the slab reinforcement and subgrade preparation standards of that era. Those standards have improved substantially since. A slab poured in 1962 has less reserve capacity to absorb soil movement than one poured today, and it has now had six decades of the region's wet-dry cycling working on it.

Levelland is on US Highway 385 and State Highway 114, about thirty-one miles and thirty-odd minutes from Lubbock. Structural permits are the City of Levelland's business, not Lubbock's, so confirm local requirements before scheduling. If a Lubbock-based contractor is quoting the job, ask whether the price includes mobilization for the drive or whether that is separate.
